Rap?
Hey guys,
Before I start I must say I am not racist nor do I have anything against rappers I just have a beef with rap music. With that said Does anyone feel like rap music is useless poems put to music repeating the whole first 2 lines 8 times and calling it a f***ing verse! I'm really ticked about this and I personally don't listen to it and I can't wait until rap dies!!!!!!! I can't stand it!!!! anyway I don't know why I posted this. If I offend anyone with this I opolligize in advance. I just wanted to state my opinion. Well I've got to go to class (bloody school) I'll get on and rant some more later

I dunno... Rap is different. It surely can't count on a lot of support on this site... But I've been known to rap, occasionally, coz it just something you gotta try if you want to refine your opinion about it. That said I tried and still don't like it too much. I surely won't listen to any 50-some cents worth of preset beat patterns that are supposed to carry the groove... But eminem did some stuff I can enjoy, when it's not too whiny and complainy. Also I have heard stuff by some others that some coworker introduced me to, and some of dat ain't half bad... Then again in the rappaz jargon "bad" is something good, so "half bad" can't be too good either...

Cop Killaz...
I have had to work many different jobs in between
gigs.. including wearing a uniform.. the week Cop
Killers was released, one of my best friends also
wearing a uniform, was shot in cold blood by a
bunch of the gansta wannabe O.G.'s getting
initiated into their gang!!! I don't even think
religious rap is real music.. when someone
has to "Sample" (rip off) someone else's music
just to make themselves money, and when anyone
talks about beating me down and then the
rape of my wife and daughter while I'm tied
up and forced to watch.. Well maybe Slaughter
is a little wiser then his years!!!  I live to tell
the young brother's the fate of the REAL O.G.'s..
they're all dead!!! the ones that weren't killed
by their own kind, or by the feds, died in prison!
It burns me as much when I have to listen to the
WIGGA's talk... And when the Aryans/white
supremacists start their shit too!!! Sure you can
send those of African descent back to Africa..
THEN YOU CAN GET THE HELL OFF MY
LAND!!!!  And it wasn't my heritage and ancestors
that enslaved the people of other nations... history
reveals the truth that most often those sold into slavery
was done so by their own people who had conquered
them in wars!!!
Now to chant poetry to a musical beat is by no means
negative.. unless the words in the poetry insights
people to senseless and useless violence...
And to try to put this all off on African Americans,
is just as wrong...  lay blame where it belongs,
greed and hatred... "Man's inhumanity to Man!!!"
Hell I will say this to the brotha's... The only difference
between Faricon and Christopher Knight is one's
a black militant and the other a white militant..
I was raised very deep in the rich southern christian
teachings.. but my Grandfather on my dad's side, being
a southern missionary baptist minister in one of the most
remote rural and poor areas in the south, and my mother's
side of the family, both made sure we learned one thing..
LOVE OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM
LOVE YOU!!!  The Golden Rule!!! I never hold any ill
or animosity towards anyone till they give me not one,
but three reasons.. sure that's not turning the other cheek
seven times seventy, but hell I only have four cheeks.
And I will always keep one unharmed so I can sit on
something!!! if a person goes out of his or her way to act
like the stereotype, that's the person I have a prejudice
and bigotry against....   My Best friend growing up was
african american.. hell he was black.. use to say to him,
marty watch it or you'll cut your pinkie... he would say
I don't have a pinkie, I have a blackie!!!!!  he flew a confederate
flag lic. plate on the front of his car!!!! He would tell the
other blacks "Heritage not Hatred!"

Blessings,

Blueyes

Rap, what is rap?
I think there is some jump to conclusion, giving a negative stereotype. Shootin ma bitches, gettin' high with ma homies, pimps and druglords, gangwars. The ghetto is  shown as a place of glory, there is no glory about what they rap about. The lifestyle they rap about is lawless, is to the complete distaste of everyone around them.
But certainly, if rap gets some music to it, and not in a pop influenced style, with decent lyrics, with a real meaning, then sure, it'll have something going for it. But I won't listen to it. It's not to my tastes. It represents things I despise.

Blueyes, you have some amazing life stories, if more people were like you and your friend, the world would be a better place.

Cheers

Hm mm
Rock=Sex and drugs
Heavy Metal =Satan
Rap=Gangs-ghetto

Although not all bands represent the above mentioned in their respective genres, the general thought is that that's what is tied up with them.If I were to summarize a thought on this I would say that each genre represents a voice against a system(usually the Gov) that some how has either oppressed, denied,or screwed the people, further more I understand that there's is no better wrong within the choice,That's why i don't pass judgment so fast. For me is about the art of expression end of story no matter what the genre nor media

Bro, there are plenty of people that can testify I am a not exaggerating...
As for getting the music to it. Does that mean you or I should be allowed
to take, say "The Doobies" Melodies, record them so close that there is
no doubt, and then present them as original music? That's just my opinion..
It's like when Clint Black re-recorded the Kiss Hit Hard Luck Woman..
It sucked!!!! And up to the Rock and Roll Over lp by kiss, their music
was awesome.. after that album, the rest from there on sucked too!!
just my opinion.. but i.m.h.o. they sold out after that..  and anytime a
person does music excerpts that they "borrow", with permission of
the artist even, It doesn't show talent in my humble opinion...

(balls fists up to mouth and starts kickin a beat)

I saw your momma tricking down by the railroad tracks,

She was laying down, a mattress strapped to her back.

when the bulls sent her stepping  She kicked em in the Ass,

She said Get over it boys for this too will pass...

that was typed real time off the top of my head!!!

Primitive Music really doesn't take much talent.. some, but not much!
A real talent should be used to enrichen and enlighten ones self and
others, not be wasted and caught up in the greed of the people that
would bottle and sell you for big profits leaving you with as little as
possible.. oh hell I can go on this rant for longer then any of you have
seen me get winded yet!!!  Simply because of what I have seen, and
what alot of you older people have seen come to pass over the last
century.. sure we weren't alive for all of it, but have seen it and the
results of it!! As well as what is happening in the world right now!!

Guys, can any of you tell me what the first two "commerically
reckonized" raps were???  I have double checked my facts..
The Man from Mars by Deborah Harry - Blondie.  and Monkey
Womack's Song "The Rapper's Delight" made popular by the
Sugarhill Gang...  sources are wikapedia, webjay, and googles
listings!  Hell the source of  Monkey Womack is ME..  He
was one of the son's of Travis Womack, a preformer and
songwriter. who had a couple of hits cut by other artists in the
seventies.. Monkey was my brother's class mate and I played
bass many times for Travis while he played drums, as well as
"rapped" and sang along with his father...
WB, there are many people that will tell you that I have lived
five lifetimes in my short years... I didn't say that about myself
first..  I do want my experiences to help others.. cuz what the
hell, they ain't puttin any bacon on my family table!

blessings,

Danny - Blueyes

Rap?
What a mad subject!
'Rap' is a very old style of writing 'poetry', spoken word rhythmical and rhyming.
There are a lot of very good rap band around, but unfortunately the majority of what we get to hear on radio/tv is the money bling sex sells huba-huba opportunists!!
I agree with PX about Eminem, I could relate to the intelligence and humor in his work, but as he grew to stardom he became soppy and numb!

Hey! Blueyes, I don't think I'm talentless or useless!
It did take some time, but all I did to Changes by Marino was take 16 bars of the original , cut them up , played around a bit , rearranged and added a vocal!
Even if you don't like what I've done to it, I still wouldn't call me talentless or useless

I like a lot of rap...the Beastie Boys, Cyprus Hill, Arrested Development, Eminem, Missy Elliot...as with any genre of music, there is the good stuff, and there is the crap.  There's always people who like the crap (which is why it gets radio play) - so I guess it's not crap to them....It's not music that causes violence, it's people who cause violence.  Don't blame the music - blame these kid's parents who are too lazy or uninvolved in their kids lives to actually teach them the difference between what is right and wrong, or - if the kids are just so messed up on their own even if their parents did put in a good effort - then shouldn't they be locked up somewhere?  There's a term for people who are absent from reality and morality it's called "schizophrenia".  They need help.  The problem with today's society is that they don't get the help they need, so they go out and shoot people.

Anyways, that said - I like rap.

Spoon My Dearest Lady,
I bow at your feet my lady! you could not
have hit the nail more squarely on the head!
All I can do is add to this in hopes that you
may be the one to understand what I am
tryin to say myself...
the fear that breeds confusion and hatred,
that breeds violence, truly is caused by human
beings.. Which as you so eloquently put, is
because of a disposable - hands off society..
Blame? well you could even start as an obscure
reference like Doctor Spock.. He should have
kept his nose in pediatrics and left it out of
child psychology!!! but hey, then again others
will as easily try to blame anyone that injected
thoughts and opinions differently, that were
long before him...
That Violence is in fact inside that individual
as well as multitudes of individuals that are
fed lies and propaganda from childhood on up.
I.E. The Third Reich..
Recently Tyra dedicated a whole show to
hip-hop, rap and gansta.. She had several of
the top black leaders - stars on in a panel
type setting.. You should have heard how
it was presented...  a "short" (now don't laugh
gang) paraphrased version;  When people
are cited to violence either by conditioning
or out of despair of harsh and adverse
conditions, It has been proven that this
is only enhanced as well as, they are made
to heighten the feeling for a need to take
action by certain music.. I.E. The American
Indians, who used drums in every aspect
of life... especially the shaman and see'ers
(phrophets, mediums), who used them to
enter trances to tell the future and/or
heal people even.. Then, they, the great
armies through out history, the austrailian
aborigines and last but not least the african
waring tribes. Which is still going on every
where today.. just not in our own back yard..
Drums were played to help to build that
anger, hatred and violence for one's enemy..
The youth today are being taught that almost
everyone around them is in fact their enemy!!
And you add a pinch of bigotry and prejudice,
ok will leave off there.. typed to much as it
is... the curse of the baptist preacher's grandkid!

Blessings,

Blueyes

Yep! I would also like to add that you shouldn't put all rap in the same hat...the stuff that is plastered all over MTV and the radio is there for one reason...TO MAKE MONEY ...violence sells, sex sells...blah blah blah..so what does that say about our society in general? No matter what you think about the genre its an artistic expression just like any other form of music..Anyways I could go on for ever but.....You don't like it...don't listen to it!

PS.. Ever hear of Public Enemy, KRS One, A Tribe Called Quest, EPMD, Leaders of the New School, Big Daddy Kane and yes even Tupac?.....positive voices for millions in the black communities..(to name a few)

Wow......this is quite a discussion.

Blueeyes, I can identify with you. You make a lot of sense.

Although rap is probably the worst-sounding to date, what Marino said is more or less true; a lot of popular music since the 60's has highlighted some bad morals.
However, I came to the conclusion long ago that the actual meaning of lyrics in no way affects the quality of a song's music. I absolutely love all types of rock. I do not like the messages about sex and drugs in them. If you know the Deep Purple song "Knocking At Your Back Door" then you'll know what I'm talking about (I think that's a great song).

What I'm really saying here is that this is two discussions at once;
rap as music, and
rap as propaganda

As I said before, I really hate rap. But I do not hate rap as propaganda; I think it's crappy music hardly deserving of being called music.
