The rebellion is the new establishment
It's funny it really is.  You all are right about music being rebellious but it is funny that the rap rebellion started by poor kids in New York is now managed by a gigantic corporation owned by old white guys. That's the major problem with rap.  Some rappers actually realize this and write about it (just listen to Ugly Duckling's "smack").  Another big thing that's made rap decay is that nobody focuses on the DJ any more, they're all just MCs. I'm glad that DJ's like dangermouse are actually performing in the spot light. When I listen to rap I like to listen to stuff from New York: MF Doom, KMD, 3rd Bass, A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, De La Soul. And some stuff from Cali: Ugly Duckling, Jurassic 5, The Pharcyde.  Also the mash up scene is amazing, thank god for DJs.

I guess what I'm really saying is that I wish hip-hop/rap would get back to it's roots and come up with some inventive things instead of rapping over metronomes.

cool thread
Very interesting subject

Is it weird that I'm conflicted?
1.  I believe in artist expression no matter what genre............but.......
2.  I also believe  that your psyche is made up of a total of your experiences.....Garbage In Garbage Out.
To believe that listening to offensive lyrics, or music, or videos ,or even porn, or whatever can't have an effect ,  imho, is not entirely true.

3   said before there is good rap and crap rap like in all forms of music

4   Bass-n Your face stated that he'd like to see the return of rap roots......imho that's never happen, once the industry starts pushing it they  screw it all up...happened to  rock music, happened to country music, happened to rap music and pop music,  they always are looking to widen the audience appeal to sell more cd's but in doing so they lose sight of what the music really is and where it came from.(sometimes the artist are just as
guilty).

5 I like some rap music there are some real good rappers on another website similar to this one and they really are good.
