This song is not in a battle

Just a quick song I wrote / recorded in a couple of days. Live (mostly.. spot the mistake) recording for YouTube with minimal editing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYbv4Ozfnd8).

I have a pretty big audition in London on the 3rd of October, thinking of either using this as my audition piece or the other recent one I posted "Smile" (http://forum.bandamp.com/Audio_Review/9269.html). Will be a solo acoustic audition so would need a bit of re-working. Opinions / thoughts welcome!

I could just stay here for days
And talk for hours about the ways
You pull me in and hold me up
It's like I'm hostage for your love
But that's alright
We're getting there

And if it all aligns
And my thoughts come true
Maybe I'll think of things
That I can say to you and

---

I turn up standing by your door
Hope you hold my hand like you did before
With that stupid smile sitting on my face
Thinking how the hell can I leave this place

So I stand there staring at the floor
Thinking "oh my god" should have asked for more
Now I'll stay here playing my guitar
Writing stupid songs about how I'm in too far

---

Sometimes I’m misunderstood
I’m not as strong as I think I should be
A little something that says you care
Means the world to me I swear

And no I’m not scared
And I guess that’s a plus
But no wait that’s a lie
I’m fucking scared to death of us

---

And something’s different about the way you smile
See when you look at me I know, that you’ll be here for a while
So many memories that we’ll create and I can hardly wait
I wonder why I wonder why

Hello Peter,

It's great to see you are adventuring out.

You'll have a lot of completion for this genre - You need to be completely different to all the others to stand a chance, depending on what you are auditioning for.

I'm gonna suggest you work on one thing and one thing only - Dynamics in both your vocals and playing the guitar.  At the moment the song is well structured and you have good energy, although the song is too long - besides for an audition normally they would ask you to perform a chorus and a verse.  Try to cut the whole song to under 3 mins.

The hardest thing  to control is dynamics - this is what sets us apart form a mediocre performance and one that will captivate the audience or listener.  It takes a lot of daily practice to get to a standard where it sounds natural and you can deliver a powerful performance.  At first you will feel uncomfortable in that when you are playing soft and I mean really soft, you may consciously think that you are not being expressive enough - don't let this deter you, instead channel all your emotion in getting the best vibe out to your audience, become venerable if you have to.

Good Luck!!

Great advice, thanks Denis! The audition is actually for a poppy kind of rock band. But yeah I still imagine there to be lots of guys with guitars there haha. I intend to stand out by performing my own song, showing that I can actually write some hits for the band think I'm gonna go for Addicted To You (http://forum.bandamp.com/Audio_Review/8826.html), works really well acoustic and it's one that I've practiced hundreds of times with the old band. Other option is "The Real You" (http://forum.bandamp.com/Audio_Review/9171.html) if I shorten it up!

Hey!!
WOW!!  You have come a loooong way buddy!   love this. And your voice is great.  I feel you are still very self conscious about your voice, I feel ya because I too jave that same issue
But I just decided to breathe in, silently tell the world to go to hell if they dont like me, and let it roll. It helps.

Dam you are really good dude.

Great song. Would sound awesome with a whole band behind it.

I'd love to see a little softer guitar playing... it would really help the vox captivate you in some parts.

Keep going man, you have talent!
