End of Prizes...
I'm going to stop sending out prizes after this next competition. It seems people are too caught up in winning some product, and less interested in voting on the best song.

Also, it takes up too much of my time + money to keep this up. I want to focus more on improving the programming on this website, and less on "customer satisfaction". It's very discouraging when one of the prize winners sends you an email in complaint...

Without any prizes (just recognition) people will be less likely to attempt to cheat the system. You will still be getting free promotion, and notoreity within the BandAMP website...

out of simple curiosity, does "this next competition" mean that the July battle will be the last?  Or does that mean the August one, since it's already listed?

Once again, I'm just curious.  I'm not hating you for it or anything retarded like that.

I have noticed there are alot less votes and ranknigs going on the songs now, i know there are alot more songs, but even so, i havent been on line for nearly a week now and there is only one more vote been put on my song than the last time i checked... Maybe no prizes will help this, only the people who are really in the spirit of the site will stick around...

I already promised prizes for the August competition, so need to keep my word on that... but July it's going to be changing... I just really hate the greediness some people have portrayed, which really disenchants me... Also, I've had complaints about how the prize giving was handled on last months battle... That really brought me down, after paying $200 for a prize, getting complained to for a silly misunderstanding... Being told they felt like they were being "ripped off"... I've put literally thousands of dollars of my own money into BandAMP, not to mention over 4 months full-time work into programming + design...

Anyways, I think it will be much nicer now... Just keeping those who really care.

Fair reaction
Thats a fair reaction. It'll be interesting to see who sticks around... You shouldn't let that put you off though mud, what you have created is just fantastic in my opinion.

One of the things I like about this site anyway is that it's a source of uncomercialised music and ideas, so keeping prizes away keeps that concept pure.

Finaly, I'm curious to know - who funds BandAMP - the server costs, the prizes etc... (I ask because of the welcome abscence of adverts)? If you do that all by yourself mud, then thats very honourable indeed - anybody who enjoys using the site will agree I'm sure.

i too thank you personally, mud.  i've spent a lot of my time online and this is the only good site out there for music like this. you've certainly put a generous amount of time into all of this.  despite enormous sacrifices from people like you in the world, you guys keep on ticking.  at long last, i'm getting further into the production of the song i want to upload, so hopefully, i'll have it done soon.  I just wanted to say that for the record, and to agree with dcspoon about who sticks around, i'm going to be here still!  (at least until i leave for canada this september!)

sponsorship?
not that the prizes etc matter to me but have you thought of looking for sponsorship for such things? Maybe the odd advert for brands of equipment, (guitar strings, amp's etc...)  could help fund the server.  Maybe even the record companies could gain something with a bit of investment here

I think its good to do this mud. I think the spirit of the website has diminished since the masses of people swarmed in. There is no way me you and the others can continue to atttempt moderating with so little time. I have to leave for a hurricane every week it seems like and you pour tons of money into here. You need to put that little donate button on here. I know I would help you out.
I think alot of people will be out of here when there are no more prizes. And the voting might van go away but not the critique. Its good to get feedback but who cares about a vote. I think its about time we clean a little house here at bandamp.

I'd like that.  Sorry... but I'm one of the swarming mass people who plans on sticking around past the prizes.  Quite honestly, I've been a bit overwhelmed with the massive quantities of music to rate, and thus... haven't... done so...  I just came here to get opinions on my music, and to get my music heard.

I think that before someone should be able to post a song they have to rate atleast 10 songs. That way people arent just putting there songs up and leaving.

That's not a bad idea...

EDIT -- I've implemented this feature...

Personally, I think that if someone isn't rewarded enough by showcasing their music and having it rated highly against many other musicians, then, well, they need to go get on MTV. :p
