Home Studio
hey guys,
look I really need help with this 1
I want to start (if this is possible)
trying to make some ok music
i guess i can write lyrics well
technically there poetry because
there is no sound or music to them
over this summer i am going to try
to save up some money and start a home
studio in my closet!(it is rather big and
i don't store clothes in it) but i have
no prior knowledge of recording
i mean NONE! so i have tried to
do some research on what i want to
do and how i would do that and here is
what i came up with.
I want to be able to record my songs
with vocal guitar drums and synth
all seperatly and then mix them together
          with ease and grace!
So I need help with finding out how to do this
i will have a small laptop i am not sure what
it  is or anything but i also want to be able to
"fake" drums do i need special equipment
or is this even possible and what is the significance
of the synthisizer?ok keeping it simple is this a good
starting setup?

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fostex-MXL-MR8MKII-990991-Digital-Recording-Package-?sku=240308

my guitar is a fender strat and i was wondering
to hook this up to the mixer would i need a special
chord or is the regular guitar chord good? and does this come with
chords for the mics? I'm telling you guys i have
no clue about this!!!! ok would this be a better
setup?

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Musicians-Friend-Production-Kit-3-Mac?sku=247508

i know that says its for podcasting but it comes
with cakewalk and could i not just use it
for my songs? I like the look of this
mixer than the other 1 it looks more
professional and it would work better
but looks can be decieving!!! If any1 will help me
I would be ever so grateful!!!!!!! thanks!!!!!

I think this would be better off in the recording section.

Also, please look around in there before posting!
I'm quite sure that you can find quite a wealth of information from the questions people have already asked.

And I'm way too lazy to start thinking about it right now.

I use cubase 5.1 but audacity works too .
I plug my guitar or mics into behringer mixer about 70 dollars into M audio sound card about 99 dollars and run cubase. For me to have the pc work with my plugins effects (I have 512 Ram and 3.2 processor)you could get away with something less than this but I'm not sure how much less.maybe 256 Ram and 1.9 processor but it would be really pushing thought at least with cubase.PM if you need more Info good luck

Hey I have audiacity on my pooter
at my house it is mostly just for
me to mix a bunch of stuff together
but i have never used it to edit my
own work (cause i cant put my music
on my pooter but...) anyway I didn't
think it would be that great of  software
because I downloaded it for free and
I never learned how to work it
but i will get my new comp and then
add it to that and then learn how to
use it and sooo this is my setup

  mic   computer
                 |
                 |
                /
              guitar

will this work ?

I have a Boss BR-900 CD...
Works great for me; guitar effects, 8 tracks, V-Tracks, etc.
Looks quite similar to the one you have.

It's got everything I need..
I'm sure I can get a far better quality out of it than I do, and it'll take me a while to outgrow it.
The drums I have on my songs are all programmed in via the function on that..
Not great, but they do the job!

That goes into an old copy of Cubasis on my computer, bought for 7 pounds off Ebay.

I recommend it, if you have the money to spend

Fl is a great program. If someone will crack it for you.

FL IS a great program, if you can get hold of FL7, you can do heaps with that, maybe consult with MindsAtPlay, but I'm pretty sure you can mic and guitar into it, or atleast do drums and some instruments, then import into audacity and mix with the rest... Or you can pull off something like what marino did, really high quality sounding stuff. Drums loops are pretty good, although I use them a little strangely, not in the style of your conventional rock loop/fill type thing... so... best thing, I would say, sample this and that... find out what suits you best.

Good luck,

WB

I don't think even Minds can help you out with FL7, I've come to the conclusion that the makers of FL have sussed out how to make a 'regularly changing registry system', in that the code changes within FL (locally on your PC) and is set to synchronize with the code at FL HQ, so to use FL6 or 7 you need to be off-line or change the date on your PC. I personally don't want to do either of those options so I use a perfectly cracked FL4, that does not synchronize its self with FL HQ.

You can in fact make music with your laptop already, no inputs required other than Internet. It's simply a matter of installing a program like FL and going bananas to the beat. It will produce millions of midi sounds and the only restriction you have when it comes to using samples is the amount of actual samples you can get your hands on.

The thing about FL is that its very intuitive and easy to learn, you can literally make a tune in 1 minute. but I would advise anyone to see it as a step to greater things!

To record your own vocals and guitar (instruments) you will need inputs, though at the very least you must have a small 'Mic' input to the laptop which will at least record low frequency audio input like vocal and guitar.
A friend of mine once said "If you really want to do something, you'll do it which ever way you can"

Guitars and Mics don't come with 'built in/pre-set' chords! The whole idea is to put in your own chords! As for 'Cables' you'll just have to follow whatever leads you can find!

That Boss BR-900 CD of Moralitys looks totally cool. I know nothing about it but it seams like a very groovy toy to have!

To hook up guitar to mixer you need a standard 1/4 cable. And to hook up mic, you need a standard mic cable.....and of course your mixer needs a mic input. But I can't imagine a mixer without at least 1.
As for hooking up your mixer to the computer, there are several ways about that. you'll have to decide for yourself.
