Merciful Moments (Alto)
*

This song is not in a battle

I sold my Tenor Sax, was never really happy with it, was either me or it was a bugger to play due to poor manufacturing. I originally purchased it as an Ex-Demo from a reputable Music shop, but I have a feeling it was returned to the shop, hence I spent ages trying to set-up the intonation etc.  I sold it on eBay for more than what I paid for it, but I did only pay under half the normal price on eBay auction.

With the money I purchased an Earlham 1996 Alto student Sax. The guy I bought from had it sitting in his attic most of the time. Well... this sax played straight out of the box, intonation is very good and only needed a good polish. I'm using the mouthpiece that came with it, which is pretty good, I like it.

Also, with other stuff I don't use anymore sold on eBay, I purchased a Focusrite Firewire Saffire pro24 Audio interface and a Tanglewood Acoustic guitar (best selling in UK), which again was a great purchase, being a lefty it's harder to find a nice guitar, this one is the basic version, did not even have to set it up, the tone, intonation and action is probably the best I've played and it only cost £99.99. The shop specialised in left-handed guitars and did a bulk purchase  on this model that normally retails for £149.99, which is still cheap considering the quality of the guitar.

This tune originally written when purchased my first Sax back in 2008.

I recorded this with the new Focusrite interface, New Acoustic and new Sax

Wow!
Am I to understand you have only been playing sax since 2008? And if so, did you teach yourself? You are obviously a song writer. Your talent is clear.

Started on a student Soprano Sax in 2008, Bought a Tenor in March this year, but struggled with it, was too heavy for one thing as I have a doggy neck. The Alto I've just purchased is much easier to play and being a student sax not so heavy as a pro model. May be it's luck, but I almost instantly found the Also Sax easier to play.  I wish I could practice it more, too load for a family home. Although I'm hoping to build a studio in my Garden in 2014.

If you like I can send you the backing track, it's in Bb, nice key for the Alto, better than the Soprano and Tenor would you believe being Bb instruments.

As a Sax Player what do you think of the tone I'm getting, I don't use a conventional embrochure, my bottom lip sits mostly on the reed, you get a smoother sounding tone, it's harder to get right, hence wish I could practice more

Thanks for the nice comments

Your tone is good
That's exactly where your bottom lip should sit. Actually the mouth piece has a lot to do with the kind of tone you get. Some are harder to use than others. I us a Claude Lakey. It takes a pretty strong embouchure. I have a fairly strong one but not as strong as it used to be. You also play it pretty well in tune. Something I have trouble with as of late.

You'll get to where you want to be. I have been playing more than 30 years.

Good luck with the studio.

Thanks. I did not explain myself properly, most players I believe roll their bottom lip so that it's resting on their teeth, my embrouchure bottom lip sits all on the reed. When I first started playing I researched it and came across an article which showed different embrochures. After experimenting I found the one what sounded best. I am going see if I can get a nice metal mouthpiece, probably an Otto Link, I bought an Otto Link tone edge 6 lay ebonite for the Soprano and liked it, nice tone and easy to blow, so I figure if I get a similar metal shaped one for the Alto, it may be nice? I use a 2.5 reed, it's sounds OK, but need to practice. I've no idea how some players use a 5 reed, they must practice at least 4 hours a day. I used to play Guitar with a chap called Godrey Madura, he was the Sax player for the UK Reggae band called 'Steel Pulse', he had a lovely Selmer Mk6 Tenor and played it with a five reed as he insited it was the only way to keep up with the volume of the band. Sadly Godfrey passed away in 2008, he was diagnosed with Cancer and died within a couple of months. This tune always makes me think of him, because it was the first tune I created on the Sax, which Godfrey listened too, he was not impressed with my tone at that time, but I'd only been playing for three weeks. Embouchure
Yea, that's how we all start. However, when I started with my sax instructor in college he made adapt the type of embouchure you describe.

I remember Steel Pulse (Earth Crisis, right?). A friend of mine from St. Croix in 1983.

You have a lot of styles my friend.

This is very well done. Sounds nice and warm and soothing.

Maybe it's not a surprise that this isn't my normal style of listening music - but I thoroughly enjoyed it all the same.

Hey Mr. D., ya new sax sounds pretty smooth and it seems you can handle it better than the old one.
The acoustic is also sounding nice.  And not to talk about the composition. Great jazzy feel again .
Only critic is that the bass sounds a bit  boomy to me. Sounds bit like a discharged battery.
