The beats....  Trance is 4 time..kick, kick, kick, kick...          Breaks are kick, kick, snare....   DnB is high bpm breaks usually with breaks layered underneath and filtered to some extent.  Heppy Hardcore is 4 time bassy kicks.. TechStep is usually kick, kick, snare, snare..   the list goes on...  wikkipedia it..

but that takes too long
