O! Yea! It is a bit much on a long thread ... it is very cool but a continuous background does become busy when scrolling up or down.

...... its VERY fresh and new though

Huiiiii! Thatīs a beautiful background, colourful, but not "hectically" (when the pic doesnīt move by scrolling). Statical pic is better, as Kings said.

Well... this picture is just a placeholder for testing. It's 228kb... way too big! And it repeats in both directions.

The goal is to change the bg pic randomly with pictures by members who are actually declared as Specimen. The size must be less than 100kb to reduce load time but good enough to spread its width to the browsers screen width w/o pixel blur.

One first step was to extend the member's album by adding a background button. At the moment it has no function except it stores some 0 and 1 into the database.

Ha! As I'm surfing the site , it's changing !
Fixed is better ... in this case ... though it repeats it's not an image that blends into it's self.
The black edge along both sides of a page is a repeated (y) image to create shade, a subtle depth, to the white page on black back.
A transparent png with a slight shade would work here now.

I like the black back and logo
Is this a stretched image ?
It looks cool in full wide screen, it would look nicer without the page edging
O yea a short page, as in a quote, looks odd in full screen ... the page has no bottom!

Nice one TK ... as they say 'A change is as good as a rest' .... I think bandamp has rested enough

Can you post or email some screenshots?
The background is darkgrey and it should be stretched to 100%. Also
I know that there are some weired issues with IE8, but FF looks fine.

See if I can send you a png to put in place of the original .... later
I'll have to see 'where in the code' the original is first

Replacing it with a transparent 'shade to nix' png would bring the page forward from the background

I made a new one based on a layered gimp pic. At the moment the edges are transparent. But it's quite easy to replace the two transparent layers (left & right) with a suitable shadow gradient.
I found out that IE6,7,8 are not able to understand the 'background-size=cover' tag. That's why the big player button on the frontpage is too big for the welcome div.
But I found a js to let it flow.

I LOVE the new look! In fact, I think the big player button in IE Is maybe a bit more interesting than the version that shows up in Firefox or Chrome (it creates a sense of depth and layers which I think is more interesting - the text may be a little bit tricky to read over the big button...).  Incidentally, I notice that in Chrome neither the blue lightening nor the "Bandamp" logo on the left show up. Everything seems to work okay in Firefox.

IE8 (and 6&7) doesnt know the 'background-size' tag. That's why the player button is big like that. I don't use Chrome, so pls check if you configured your browser with proper display options. Opera has a turbo option for slow networks, it blocks some pics in that mode
