Came across this index page of SF2s ..... if you use the SF2 format in your recording and production this page is well worth a few hours attention.

What is a SF2 file

Can we have a basic explanation please

OK basic run down ; SF2 is a file format developed by Creative and someone else .... it is a Sound Font, it contains sounds and samples, it can be loaded into FL through the Fruity Sound Font Player insert and into Cubase directly (I'd have to spend some time on it to give you an explanation but it's a matter of loading it into a Midi channel) and they can be loaded into particular VSTi's (again I'd have to go after it to find out which ones)

I dont know if Vienna will work on a system without a Creative product, but it's Vienna you need to edit SF2s.
It's the program you use to decide which different sounds come under which keys or whether you have one sound/sample running along the whole keyboard range, changing with the note ... samples on the low keys then play slow and samples on the high keys play fast ....
You can also set up a note to be a one hit or a continuous note, the difference between a drum hit and a Violin for instance.
You can also make different Patches (sets of sounds/samples on key range) and Banks (sets of Patches), but then the SF2s do get very big, and might cause memory problems.
