Okay, so I've written a really nice-sounding cover of "The Road to #1", by Dankinstein (BandAMP member).

I added drums, strings, and bass, along with a brand new arrangement... But I read the rules section and I found that I needed to ask the original artist for permission to upload the cover. Okay, I understand that, but I highly doubt that I'm going to find this artist anywhere, because he was last active on BandAMP during July 09th, 2003... Does this mean I can't upload it anymore?

As long as you give the DUE and AMPLE credit to the member who you are covering then it should be fine.
State what you have changed, what is the same, maybe have a link to the original song, thats sorta stuff

I totally agree with this guideline.

It's worth trying to contact the member, I think you should ask permission, it's the right thing to do

Okay, thanks for your feedback, everyone. I think I'll give him a month or two to respond. After that, I'll upload it, but I will definitely provide most, if not full credit to Dankinstein for the song.

If you think one or two months is unfair, just tell me... I honestly don't want to get into copyright/cover song issues.

Make sure to disable the download option once it's uploaded.

I dont know if he's old, but that hes not been active for a while is an understatement, could even be an overstatement....I dont think he's ever been active : 2 songs , 2 posts !!
You have to review at least 3 to upload these days, if that still works that is!

I'd say it is either Mud himself or a friend 'just making up the numbers' for a then new site, or his songs were from the old old site.
In any case I've followed this thread and all I can add is 'In the name of creativity, do anything you want to !'
The dude should be bloody grateful someone took the time to listen to his track and then be inspired enough to even add more to it....after 6 years !!

lol It's his own fault for uploading....unless he originally uploaded to a site under a different name...then your in deep shit...and he'll probably sue the pants of you !!
