Guitar?
hey guys I own an electric guitar
and of course want to record some
for musical purposes (duh) but I
talked to blueyes the other day
and he told me to hook my amp
and use it as a preamp and the setup
he told me to use looked something
like this

GUITAR--->AMP-->AMP OUT--->COMPUTER

now i hooked this up and went into windows
recorder and tried to lay down some tracks
of course I have the right hookup to record
and all and I start playing nothing! now Im
in no way saying this is blu's fault but it
just dosnt work I then plug my guitar straight
into the mic jack I try both that and the line in jack
too but still nothing. Is this on my comps
end or is the program or what should I try it
with something like audacity or somthing!!
I reall need some help here guys and would apreciate
any help at all!!! thanks alot

A few things to check:
 - Is your guitar on?  This can mean two things.  If you've got some crazy pickup system, it may require batteries (unless you've got a bass, this is unlikely).  Then, check your volume.
 - Are your cables good?  Try BOTH of them into the amp and see if the cabinet produces sound.
 - Is your recording device on your computer set to the input you are plugging cables into?  If so, is the input level high enough or not muted?
 - If you have to use some sort of converter to change 1/8 to 3/8 inch, are you sure that the converter is working?

Yes I checked these things but the
thing I found is that it wont pickup
anything when I plug it into the
mic place but when i plug it into
line it it would barley pick stuff up
I messed around with some settings
and junk and got it to work I dont
have my amp up here in nashville
but Im shure that It will work with
an amp alot better but thanks for your help
and if you ever need help with sumtin
you can get me here!!

when you get your amp...
just don't turn the volume to high..
using it as a pre-amp is fine and will
help alot.. but you don't want to over
load everthing and blow your speakers,
headphone and,or your ousnd casr..
I also apologize, I took for granted that
you would know windows shite well enough
to know your way around in the Master
Volume control.. for example how to go
into propertied and change back and forth
between recording and playback.. it's there
you find your input and input levels..  there
you can set it for mic or line in... this can
also be found in control panel in the sounds
icon....  again I apologize for assuming that
you had already hacked out windows to that
extent.. I won't let that happen again..

ok well I have downloaded audacity to my computer
and have a butt-load of effects on there Im
going to download some vstdrums and maybe keyboard
on there and see what I can do... oh yea and when I record
I get this staticy sound but again this is just straight
guitar to laptop so will using an amp take this
(for the most part) away so I can get some decent
stuff?

amp...
amp into sound card through "line in" on the
laptop.. but make sure you use the line out
or effects send from the amp.. not direct
from a speaker output or external speaker
output.. again you can toast your computer's
sound card that way... to bad you don't have
one of the little behringer usb mixers...
to bypass your soundcard completely and
come in usb or firewire eliminates alot of
the problems that occur trying to go through
one's soundcard.. right now all I can fuss
about on my system is a latency problem..
(delay)... but will figure the correct settings out
soon...
