Epiphone does suck.
Kidding...seriously they are right. Go to a few guitar shops, pick up the guitars in your pricerange and see what grabs you. You will need to decide how you are going to prioritise sound/playability/style and make a decision based on how the guitar satisfies these and the kind of music you would like to play.

Jay Tursers are fairly well crafted, I have a double cutaway les paul style Turser. It is infinitely better than a squire, but if you want a pretty guitar for a little bit more, I'd save up for a fender mexican. Pretty versatile, you can get some nice highs, and some really warm lows.
