Gradient White
*

This song is not in a battle

I enjoy writing short little ideas into a black journal before I go to bed and Gradient White was written after I thought about ghosts.  I like writing about the non-living (but not necessarily the undead lol) and how they feel and what they go through.  I think that Ben Cooper of Radical Face bit me with this bug and it's an interesting topic to write about.  Ultimately, these short musical journal entries are saved like lyrics on napkins, to be revised and arranged on a future date (and some, like Leaflette and See You In The Sea, are written in to full length songs).

This one is about a ghost who haunts an abandoned house and longs to be recognized, but goes unnoticed.

One-shot recording with slight reverb.

[lyrics]

The house is hollowed out
Void of any natural sound
Even though I'm still living here

I once was flesh with color tone
And not just gradient monochrome
Transparently, that's the story my dear

I'm on the staircase
Glancing from the 3rd step
Holding out my hand
But you haven't seen me yet

So I'll just sway
Like a sheet on clothesline
Ghostly white
My thoughts swing back and forth

So will you come and play
Turning knobs and knocking door
Creaking boards
My threads are tangled up and torn

The guitar work in your music is beautiful! Have you considered adding a solo piece to this? Seems like your in a hurry to get the song over with perhaps? Was a wonderful listen, and I am looking forward to hearing what you have next.

Why don't you group all your ditty's and try and put them in an order to create a story - depends how many you got. I could visualise your lyrics, meaning it could go well with a video.

Great work

Appreciate the listen everyone!

Silassugg, yea it probably was a bit rushed like most of my quick acoustic recordings haha!  Sometimes I just want to record them so I can remember them.  It's happened a few times where I wrote something down and DIDN'T record something, only to forget how I wanted to sing and play it a few days later.

TKey, thank you sir I like to imagine sheets on a clothes like as if they were ghosts.

Dennis, this isn't the first time I've written about ghosts!  Lately, I've been writing about certain topics multiple times over the course of a month, then pick and choose pieces of the lyrics I like the most and form a new song.  Oddly, I call it poetry, but I always write the words and music together as if I can't write without my guitar.  A story with video would be pretty neat though! I like that idea!

Some lyrics from a previous "Ghost" song about a little ghost boy how meets a little ghost girl:

[Verse]
Oh little ghost girl
How would you like to stay with me
From the look of things
You can use my company

Oh what's your name girl
What's that, you passed not long ago
Well that's okay my dear
Just let me take your coat

[Chorus]
All those living beings
They're not aware
In this broken home
With these broken chairs

We're looking
From the flight of stairs
At the end of the hallway

Until the end of time
We'll haunt these floors
And turn these knobs
And knock these doors

And when they sleep
I'll hold your hands...
We will walk together
For eternity...

For eternity...

[Verse]
You're such a young girl
So don't you think that it's a shame?
That you lost your light
And no longer opaque

I bet they miss you
Is that what you'd want me to say
When your eyes are closed
Holding a bouquet

[Chorus]
Together me and you
Will press softly
The black and white
Piano keys

I'll teach you
How to minuet
We'll waltz down the hallway

Until the cobwebs grow
So thick and white
And its resiliency
Shines in the light

Of a moon that's
hanging low...
We will walk together
For eternity...

For eternity...

Greg/Yoko, thanks for listening once again!  Tim Burton-esque video I like the sound of that!

Fish,

I'm recording this in my bedroom   Just added some reverb to create some space!

My mic is a Shure PG42 and it's running into a Focusrite Saffire Pro24 pre-amp.

Thanks Kunadiun!

I can't wait to turn this into an Undercover Apple song.  It'll probably have Emie singing with me on harmony   Expect more epic 8bit-ness and synths very soon! We're currently putting the new EP together!

Another nice track. I really like the vocal style, it reminds me a lot of Stars and I like the bareness of this track. I've always loved really short songs, they leave the listener wanting more. Great work.
