Hey beebs, it sounds like you have snapping turned off. At the top of the screen, on the right edge of the bottom row there should be a drop down menu with the word 'SNAP' written under it. Change this to 'cell' (default) or some other subdivision to allow your patterns and clips to snap within certain increments.
